Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Apple Rock Course to Host Exclusive Folds of Honor Event

First-ever Legacy Cup event at acclaimed resort honors, supports military families
HORSESHOE BAY, TX – One of Central Texas’ quintessential Hill Country golf experiences, the 18-hole Apple Rock Course at the AAA-Four Diamond- and Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Award-winning Horseshoe Bay Resort (and part of the Crescent Hotels & Resorts Latitudes collection), will host the inaugural Folds of Honor Legacy Cup on Monday, October 28.
Founded in 2007 by Lt Col Dan Rooney, the only F-16 fighter pilot to also be a PGA of America Golf Professional, the Folds of Honor has awarded 44,000 scholarships to military spouses and children, totaling roughly $200 million in all 50 states. Among the students served, 41 percent have been minorities. It is rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and Platinum on GuideStar.
Bringing the Legacy Cup to Horseshoe Bay Resort was made possible by instrumental efforts of Ron Doherty and Steve Wilkins, members of The Club at Horseshoe Bay Resort, who had a vision to support the worthwhile efforts of The Folds of Honor and wanted to help establish an unforgettable event that, hopefully, endures and raises awareness for the needs of military families for many years.
The tournament’s slate of events includes a special presentation by guest speaker Pamela Kendall, wife of the late United States Air Force Chief Master Sergeant William Kendall (a decorated Airman who was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 2012 and lost his life after 30 years of military service in 2016), prior to play. Folds of Honor provided scholarships to Kendall’s sons, erasing worry about school expenses. Her oldest son, Christian, recently graduated from the University of Utah with a marketing degree and is a fellow Folds of Honor speaker. Kendall’s youngest son currently attends the University of Utah, studying film and music production. Folds of Honor has given the Kendall family a sense of community that shares a common loss and common strength.
Kendall’s presentation will be immediately followed by the Color Guard’s 21-Ball Salute and a jet flyover. Immediately following lunch, a shotgun, four-person scramble format tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. PGA TOUR Champions players Rich Beem (2002 PGA Championship winner) and Wes Short Jr. will be at par-three holes, greeting and cheering on players. Afterwards, there will be an awards dinner replete with raffle items, a silent auction, and a live auction.
“The amazing work done by the Folds of Honor and Lt. Col. Dan Rooney is important and inspirational,” said Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Director of Golf Operations Anthony Holder. “It is a distinct privilege to host the Legacy Cup and play a part in fundraising and building awareness for the vital impact the Folds of Honor has on deserving military families. Our chance to pay forward our gifts and good fortune we have received to honor service members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice is very meaningful to our team and our members. We look forward to welcoming everyone who participates in this special event.”
The third Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course built at Horseshoe Bay Resort, Apple Rock, opened in 1985 to rave reviews including “Best New Resort Courses in America” by Golf Digest. This spectacular course is touted as one of the most scenic and breathtaking championship golf courses in Texas. Spanning 147 acres, RTJ, Sr. used some of the highest, most picturesque land in Horseshoe Bay for the layout.
At 6,999 yards, par 72, with a championship tee rating of 74.6 and a slope of 140, Apple Rock is a fun thrill ride with some of the best scenic views in all of Texas.
