Improvements Include Replacing Greens, Resurfacing Existing Bunker Faces August 15, 2019, Conway, S.C. — Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club is proud to announce that major renovations to its greens, bunkers and around its fairways are complete, and the course re-opened August 12.
Ryan McCarty, general manager of Shaftesbury, said the 6,935-yard course had its greens replaced and its bunker faces resurfaced. The renovations included having mounds built and adding waste areas to the remaining holes from the first renovation in 2016.
Shaftesbury Glen has always been known for being in fantastic condition with great greens, and McCarty said he wanted to make sure it stayed that way.
“In the summer of 2018, we started to see the age of our greens and were not able to keep them in the condition that we are known for, and what our players expect,” McCarty said of the course that opened in 2001. “We decided to change the putting surface to a more heat-tolerant grass.”
McCarty said they decided to install Sunday Bermuda grass. He said this strand of grass is fairly new to the market but is quickly growing on the Grand Strand.
“Sunday Bermuda is very heat tolerant, is easier to maintain than A1 Bent, and will not compromise the putting surface,” he said. “We will be able to keep the speed of the greens to an industry standard and provide a true putting service for our golfers.”
Shaftesbury Glen also administered a waste-area renovations project that started in 2016.
“We have added an additional 250,000 square feet of waste areas, which will help drain the course,” McCarty said. “This will hopefully eliminate some of the ‘cart path only’ days. This project will also allow our guests to navigate around the course easily when we do have to remain on cart paths.”
McCarty said each bunker was specifically designed to help the golfer get closer to his or her next shot. Waste areas were added or extended to holes 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, and 14.
“The staff of Shaftesbury Glen has worked very hard this summer to produce a product that we are very proud of,” McCarty said. “We are excited for everyone to play the new Shaftesbury Glen and see for themselves.”
