As one of its first major projects, the rejuvenated Utah Golf Foundation has announced the creation of Veterans on Course, a free golf program open to veterans of all ages and skill levels. The 2016 events will be held at three of Utah’s top golf courses, Davis Park, River Oaks, and Hobble Creek. Each event will begin at 3 p.m. with an instructional clinic from a PGA Professional, followed by a nine-hole round of golf and a social gathering. The scheduled events are as follows:
Thursday, June 23rd at Davis Park GC
Thursday, July 7th at River Oaks GC
Thursday, August 11th at Hobble Creek GC
As a Utah Golf Foundation program, the mission of Veterans on Course is to provide veterans with access to the game of golf. Each event will host a maximum of 50 participants; however, veterans are not limited to any one event.
“After talking with a number of veterans, we determined the need to gather veterans together to enjoy the greatest game and share experiences,” said Utah Golf Association’s Executive Director Bill Walker. “Our goal is to get 150 veterans interested in participating during this inaugural season” he added.
Dean Cottle, the new president of the Utah Golf Foundation, said, “We hope to spread the word about this program to all veterans in the state and encourage their participation. The camaraderie will be the highlight of the event and golf will be the vehicle to gather them together. All veterans are encouraged to participate, including our disabled veterans.”

The First Tee of Utah will support the Utah Golf Foundation by serving as a receipt and distribution location for donated golf clubs, balls, and bags for veterans who are just getting started in the game. The First Tee of Utah’s office is located at Golf The Round, 680 West 3300 South in Salt Lake City. The Vets’ Club Depot also will be conveniently present at every Veterans on Course event with available equipment for the participants.
Appointments are recommended for veterans interested in receiving golf equipment from the Vets’ Club Depot. However, walk-ins also are welcome during The First Tee of Utah’s business hours, Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Schedule an appointment with The First Tee of Utah’s Executive Director Paul Pugmire by filling out the appointment form under the Veterans on Course tab at utahgolffoundation.org.
The Vets’ Club Depot accepts donations during The First Tee of Utah’s office hours. If you have clubs and other golf equipment you would like to donate to veterans in need, you may do so at The First Tee of Utah and receive a donation receipt. Contributions are greatly appreciated.
