Golf Live Extra Provides Fans with 24/7 Golf Channel Content for Complete FedExCup Playoffs Coverage
ORLANDO, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2013) – NBC Sports Group begins its coverage of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs on Friday with four-round coverage of the Deutsche Bank Championship from TPC Boston, and continues with the BMW Championship (Sept. 12-15) and the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola (Sept. 19-22).
Golf Channel will carry first- and second-round live coverage of each of the remaining FedExCup Playoff events, as well as weekend lead-in coverage prior to GOLF CHANNEL ON NBC’s coverage of the third and final rounds. Golf Channel also will replay its early round coverage and GOLF CHANNEL ON NBC’s weekend coverage in primetime. In total, NBC Sports Group will televise well over 100 hours of FedExCup Playoffs action for the remaining three tournaments. Additionally, Golf Channel will originate its daily news show, GOLF CENTRAL,from the final two Playoff sites in Chicago and Atlanta.
From an initial field of 125, the top-100 players in the FedExCup points standings following last week’s opening playoff event will compete this week in Boston. Masters champion Adam Scott’s come-from-behind victory at The Barclays not only moved him into No. 2 slot on the points list behind Tiger Woods, it also bolstered him to a career-best No. 2 in the world and puts him into the conversation about the PGA TOUR player of the year. Results from this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship will further narrow the field to 70 players for the BMW Championship, which will be contested at Conway Farms Golf Club outside Chicago. The final cut following the BMW Championship will determine which 30 players will compete in the season-ending TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola at famed East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, where the FedExCup champion will be crowned and awarded a $10 million check.
BROADCAST TEAMS: Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller – wrapping up their 14th season together – will anchor NBC’s weekend coverage of the final three PGA TOUR events, joined by tower reporters Gary Koch and Peter Jacobsen; on-course reporters Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay; and interviewer Steve Sands. Multiple Emmy Award-winning essayist Jimmy Roberts will join the team for the final two FedExCup Playoff events. Terry Gannon (Deutsche Bank/TOUR Championship) and Rich Lerner (BMW) will handle play-by-play duties for Golf Channel’s early round coverage, with Frank Nobilo serving as lead analyst.
GOLF CENTRAL ROAD SHOW: All GOLF CENTRAL telecasts for the final two FedExCup Playoff events will originate from the tournament locations: Conway Farms Golf Club (BMW Championship) in suburban Chicago and East Lake Golf Club (TOUR Championship) in Atlanta. Reporting on all the golf news from around the globe will be Rich Lerner, Brandel Chamblee, Kelly Tilghman, Todd Lewis and Tim Rosaforte.
ROAD TO THE BMW: On the eve of the FedExCup Playoffs’ third event, Golf Channel will air ROAD TO THE BMW CHAMPIONSHIP, a primetime GOLF CENTRAL special hosted by Kelly Tilghman, Brandel Chamblee and Mark Rolfing. This 30-minute tournament preview will break down the field of 70 qualified players and how they’ve progressed through the Playoffs. Additionally, the show will remember Rory McIlroy’s 2012 BMW Championship win at Crooked Stick Golf Club and Luke Donald will host a tour of Conway Farms Golf Club, his home golf course and host to this year’s competition.
SPOTLIGHT COVERAGE RETURNS: Golf Channel’s SPOTLIGHT COVERAGE will return for the BMW Championship, focusing on the finishing stretch of holes at Conway Farms Golf Club while complementing NBC’s live, third- and final-round coverage. While NBC is on the air Saturday and Sunday with traditional coverage, Golf Channel’s SPOTLIGHT COVERAGE also will air live with a different look from the same tournament. Viewers will be offered an exclusive look at holes 15, 16, 17 and 18 – a stretch that should have an important say in which 30 players will advance to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. The 15th hole is a risk/reward, driveable par-4 with water down the left and the 18th hole is a challenging par-5 approaching 600 yards. Rich Lerner and Curt Byrum will host Golf Channel’s SPOTLIGHT COVERAGE, with Phil Parkin and Scott McCarron reporting from the golf course.
