The Annual Golf Championship Takes Place at Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort
Cancun, Mexico (October 18, 2012) – The Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour will return to Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort this year between October 22 and 25 to stage the golf championship that concludes the 2012 season. The annual golf championship was known as the Sunbelt Senior Tour until 2011, when the Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) stepped up to sponsor the tour in an effort to promote Cancun and Mexico as a leading golf destination.
“Many golfers have yet to discover the breathtaking golf courses that Cancun offers golf professionals and beginners, but we are proud to be home to some of the most challenging and scenic courses designed by world renowned golf course architects,” said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the CVB. “By hosting prestigious gold championships such as the Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour, we hope to offer golfers an unmatched experience, highlighting the destination as a true golfer’s paradise.”
The tournament ends a yearlong schedule where senior golf professionals competed to earn a spot in this week’s tour championship. All of the top ten players on the money list will attend the Cancun championship. Many of the players in the field are past PGA Tour and Champions Tour players.
“The people in charge of the Cancun CVB had a great vision of promoting Cancun and Mexico to golfers all across the east coast. Their support has allowed this event to become the largest in the tours history,” said Tournament Director Tom Eubank. “The golf professionals have been excited about returning to Cancun this year. They had a great experience during last year’s Tour Championship and all of them loved Moon Palace.”
Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort offers golfers two dynamic courses. Each layout challenges golfers to navigate through native vegetation, numerous wetlands and strategically-placed bunkers. Each of the three nine-hole courses offers a distinctive environment that challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Created to harmonize with the tropical lushness of Cancun, this 7,165-yard, 72-par golf course features four sets of tees. Highlights include: the signature hole, number 17, a 151-yard, par 3, that plays downwind to an island green; the sixth hole, a par 4 that plays 336 yards and is drivable, but has a carry over water; and the finishing hole, a strong par 4 that plays 446 yards.
The Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour has been very successful at grooming professionals for future triumphs on the Champions Tour or European Senior Tour. Just this year, Barry Lane of England won two Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour events in preparation for his season in Europe this summer. His career took off after those two wins, landing him a European Senior Tour win in Wales, a third place finish in the British Senior Open and two other second place finishes to catapult him to the top of the money list.
Other great players taking the field in Cancun will be last year’s Tour Championship winner and 2011 season money leader, Jim Chancey, who has played on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour for more than 35 years. Also joining him will be Tom Eubank, two-time winner this year and current leader on the season money list, along with Javier Sanchez, originally from Mexico and winner of three events in 2011. Dave Rummells, a lifetime member of the PGA Tour with $2.2 million in earnings is expected to return along with veteran PGA Tour player and five-time winner Danny Edwards.
The champion of the Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour will take home $12,000 and a free one-week vacation to Palace Resorts, which has also played a big role, hosting the event at one of the most celebrated courses in Cancun.
The Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour is taking place at the perfect time as Le Blanc Spa Resort, Palace Resorts’ AAA Five Diamond Award-winning property, is offering guests who stay three nights or more the opportunity to enjoy endless golf at the nearby Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort as well as Riviera Cancun Golf & Resorts, two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses. Le Blanc’s “Endless Golf” offer is available for booking from May 14 – December 15, 2012 with a travel window between December 24, 2012 and December 23, 2013.
