Exclusive Supporting Sponsor of the PGA’s “Let’s Move on Course!” Initiative Encourages Golfers to Lead Healthier Lifestyles
NEW YORK, May 23, 2012 – Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the Official Hospital of The PGA of America, announced today the launch of an interactive Website dedicated to The PGA of America’s “Let’s Move on Course!” health and fitness initiative. Entering its second year as the exclusive supporting sponsor of the program, HSS has customized hss.edu/golf to encourage golfers and golf fans to walk the course by offering them an easy way to keep track of their steps and calculate how those steps contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Consumers visiting hss.edu/golf can create a personalized “walking” account to track their steps daily. By including height and weight to obtain accurate information regarding calories and BMI index, the site automatically keeps a running tally of total steps walked (converted to miles) and calories burned. Walkers can use a pedometer to track their steps, or if they don’t have one, they can enter the duration of their activity and the site will calculate steps for them.
“This website is an extension of our commitment to injury prevention and to promoting a healthy lifestyle,” said HSS CEO Lou Shapiro. “Golf and walking are a natural fit, and HSS is proud to partner again with The PGA of America on LMOC and engage golfers and golf fans all year long.”
Users can create groups to compete with fellow walkers, and the site features a leaderboard to display the top 10. The profile also tracks where an individual ranks if not in the top 10. Consumers also have the option to track rounds of golf throughout the year by recording course names and scores, watch instructional videos and find golf tips to stay healthy on the course. The site also has a Facebook feature to share individual activities with friends.
Let’s Move on Course! reflects The PGA of America’s continual support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign and encourages golfers and golf fans to pick up a pedometer, walk the course and keep track of their steps as a way to enhance a healthy lifestyle at all PGA major championships. In 2011, HSS distributed 25,000 branded pedometers to fans at the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. In 2012, HSS will distribute 60,000 total pedometers for attendees at the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.
